So why Wildflower and Grassland Management?
Grasslands, large or small, can be very important for wildlife, providing a haven for a wide range of wildflowers, birds, animals and invertebrates. With sensitive management this wildlife can be encouraged and conserved. Without management, grasslands become invaded by vigorous ‘weeds’, rank grasses and scrub that out compete wildflowers. Eventually scrub may completely take over, resulting in the loss of a valuable refuge for wildflowers and the wildlife they support.
The exact management requirements of an area of grassland not only vary with the site location, but also on the species present. So before any work is started, it is important to survey the grassland to find out what wildflowers are already there. Meadows containing rare plants will need particularly careful management and Twig is always happy to offer advice.
